Day 25: Cycling from Berlin to Athens

Day 25

Generalski Stol > Slunj

53.7km

3 hours 15 mins

595m elevation gain

We sent off in the morning with light drizzle, which quickly turned into pouring rain and it was also very cold. A complete transformation from the day before. We had all our rain gear on but quickly got drenched. My phone wasn't working well in its rain cover and I took us up the wrong road, a big mistake in this rain (you can see on the map). After turning around, we headed down the correct road which wasn't too busy and was quite a nice route, except for the fact that it was pouring with rain.

Cold and wet

There were no towns, a few abandoned houses, some lived in - one man outside his, re-arranging his honey pots on sale. Once we got to Slunj at the end of the road we were cold and wet. We headed straight for hot food and found a bistro. We changed our tops to dry clothes but we were still cold after the meal and the rain had not stopped. We decided to not continue the 35km to the National Park but instead to stay the night. We found a few guest houses online and cycled to one only 750 metres away, on the road we were shivering and our teeth were chattering. We turned up to the door of guest house Karlo freezing and shaking and the lady brought us straight up to the room - bikes into the garage and we took hot showers!!

Rastoke village

Sights of note:

  • Cows crossing the road, as we turned the corner we saw the farmer, smoking a cigarette in the rain
  • The signpost for Slunj - relief!
  • A man arranging his honey pots of sale
  • Lots of signs reading "Sir Cheese" - I realised the Croatian word for cheese is sir it isn't a knightly cheese
  • A giant hole in a footbridge in Rastoke

The hole in the footbridge - and there were many more!

Rastoke

It turns out Slunj has another town within it, Rastoke, which is an historical village on the riverbanks, intertwined within waterfalls and includes a 19th century mill. All the photos are from there as it was too rainy during the cycle to take photos. We visited and had dinner in one of the old houses, Petro restaurant, which had yummy food and a great vegetarian platter.
