Day 20: Cycling from Berlin to Athens ITALY

Day 20

Villach > Tarvisio

33.6km

2 hours 2 mins

487m elevation gain

After yesterday's wet ride, we decided to have a shorter trip today and stay the night in Italy. It rained on us a little today but wasn't too bad. The good news is we stopped at an Intersport and Shanky picked up a new pannier rain cover which fits perfectly!

The border

There was for the first time a significant border to cross which obviously had been used in the past but was now inactive. At the border our Austrian cycle path had a signpost notifying us of its abrupt end, but luckily on the Italian side there was an equally well marked path for us to follow to Tarvisio, we had a few hills but came into town in no time. Our hotel is cute, much better value than the places in Austria and we headed straight out for pizza, pasta and Aperol Spritz.

Sights of note:

  • A strange water tower
  • The Austrian-Italian border
  • Pizza

A pretty church we saw leaving Villach
