Day 3
Elster > Prettin > Torgau > Staritz
88.5km
4 hours 48 mins
176m elevation gain
I think we are finally getting into the flow of cycling now and as we were following the Elbe River we pushed ourselves to do over 80km. We were getting a little tired by the end but we made it to the lovely guesthouse Pension Lindenhof that we were aiming for. They took our bikes for us into their shed and prepared us a lovely meal - we ordered a starter each and three mains between us! They even made a special pasta dish with vegetables for Shanky and his vegetarianism.
The Road Works
It turns out our Dutch isn't good enough to decipher German signs. We first of all missed the diversion route signposts and then we ignored the warning - roadworks in progress, do not enter signs. We carried on and ended up in a very messy situation, right up next to the diggers (some of which were driverless) and a whole ton of gravel etc. in our tyres! Whoops

Probably best to go back... |
Sights of note
- A four-person tandem! Three adults and one child at the back
- A pillar with a man made bird's nest and some huge crane-like birds on top
- We took a chain bridge across one section of the river

The Rain
It rained very hard during the night and breakfast time. By the time we were leaving the guesthouse it had eased off a lot and was only a drizzle, but we put on our rain coats, the pannier waterproof covers and Shanky's helmet has a pull out rain cover as well! We looked the part and stayed nice and dry for the first 20 minutes of the ride and then the rain was over for the day, so we took it all off again. But it was a good test run for the future.
Update on the bites
Much better now, swelling has gone down and the bug spray has ensured that there are no new bites to contend with. Shanky suggested we buy 10 more bottles of bug spray in Dresden... but i think we are ok now.
